- Gei|ger counter «GY guhr»or Gei|ger-Mül|ler counter«GY guhr mooL uhr»,Physics. a device which detects and counts ionizing particles. It consists essentially of a tube with two electrodes between which a high potential difference is maintained. When a charged particle enters the tube, ionization occurs, setting up a current which actuates a loudspeaker or other indicating device.
